Gortyna is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country, with a history dating back to the Neolithic era of 7000 BC and with impressive monuments from various periods of history - Minoan, Doric, Roman, and Byzantine. See the famous "Code of Gortyna and coins depicting the conquest of Europe by Zeus. Matala is a beautiful village well known for its hippie residents during the 1970's.
